Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
