Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
