Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
