Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
