Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
