Be a Master of Craps – Tricks and Schemes: The Background of Craps

Be smart, play brilliant, and master craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
