Be a Master of Craps – Tricks and Schemes: The Past of Craps

Be brilliant, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
