Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
