Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
