Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
