Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
