Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
