Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
