Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
