Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
