Master Craps – Hints and Techniques: The Background of Craps

Be brilliant, play clever, and pickup craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
