Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
