Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
