Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
