Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
