Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
