Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
