Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
