Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
