Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
