Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
