Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
