Become Versed in Craps – Tricks and Tactics: The Background of Craps

Be smart, play brilliant, and master craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
