Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
