Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
