Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
