Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
