Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
