Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
