Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
