Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
