Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
