The History of Casino Craps

The recorded history of Craps dates back to a dice game known as Hazard, which goes back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in 1813. Hazard is thought to be a offshoot of Azzahr, which means ‘the die’ a game enjoyed by Arabs.

The game evolved as it traveled from the Arab regions to France and then to England. By the early 18th century, cultivated game rules for Hazard had been developed. France started playing the English version of Hazard and is thought to have been imported to America by early French colonizers. In the mid-1700s, when the British beat the French in British North America, the French colonists relocated to Louisiana. Dice were enjoyed on river boats, casinos and wharfs and a streamlined ‘American’ version of Craps was created. The game moved west and is a favoured game that is participated in all over the United States and throughout the world.

The name ‘Craps’ is believed to be a French enunciation of the term crabs, which means two ‘1s’. There are two general forms of Craps that are played-street Craps and casino Craps. Street caps, accurately called seeing as it is gambled on the streets is where a hurler sets a point and then attempts to acquire that point. The betting is made either for or opposed to the hurler and somebody must cover the wager in order for the craps game to continue.

In casino Craps, which is the normal game, competed in in betting houses, the casino backs the casino game. The participants gamble against the casino-the house covers all of the bets of all of the players. Craps was a very popular game but in the last 20 years had divided itself and different games, such as poker and blackjack became more popular. However, Craps is observing a surge in recognition once again in net betting houses and in real world betting houses.
